Sticking it back into its storage slot on the handle is fiddly, and I constantly worry about losing the tiny plastic clicker in the grass. It folds down small enough to throw into my rucksack.

I ordered the Maectech 2-in-1 Magnetic Phone Tripod as it looked like an impressive compact, travel-friendly setup for video calls or light vlogging, and after using it for a while I think it is a good product, but quite a niche one.The build quality is genuinely impressive. The aluminium construction feels solid and well finished, and the magnetic attachment is very strong. Combined with the rubberised surface, it holds the phone securely without any concern about slipping or scratching. It feels far more trustworthy than many MagSafe accessories I have used. The feet also have rubberised ends, which is a thoughtful touch to protect surfaces. Overall, it has a clean, precise, premium feel that would not be out of place in an Apple Store.One thing that stood out immediately is how stiff the hinges are. You definitely need two hands to set it up, but in this case I see that as a positive. Once it is in position, it stays there. There is no sagging or drifting, which is exactly what you want from something acting as a stand.However, it is important to be clear about what this is. At around 19 cm tall at the centre of the MagSafe mount, this is not a traditional tripod. It is best thought of as a desk stand or mini tripod. You will need to place it on a table or surface to get a usable height. It works very well for video calls, desk-based recording, or close-up shots, but it is not suitable for standing shots or general tripod use.It is not ideal as a regular MagSafe stand either, as it is quite tall for that purpose. The built-in light is a useful addition, but it only works when the phone is mounted in landscape orientation. In practice, that is the only position that feels fully stable and properly aligned with the light. If you prefer shooting in portrait, the light becomes largely redundant.Balance is also something to pay attention to. The phone needs to be positioned directly over, or close to, the pivot point of the legs. If it sits too far back, the whole setup can topple. Once you get used to this it is fine, but it is not completely forgiving.On the plus side, when folded it feels very secure and is comfortable to hold if you want to use it handheld during recording, which is not something I can say for many MagSafe accessories. It is compact, easy to carry, and clearly designed with portability in mind.Overall, this is a well-engineered and reliable piece of kit, but it is more specialised than it first appears. If you want a stable, compact stand for desk use, video calls, or simple landscape filming, it works very well. If you are expecting a flexible, all-purpose tripod, you may find it limiting.
